FAQ: HVUT - Form 2290 - Your Truck tax online filing - EFILE 2290

Who needs to file Form 2290 and pay Heavy Vehicle Use Tax?

Anyone who owns and registers a heavy highway vehicle weighing 55,000 pounds or more must file IRS Form 2290 and pay Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT). Most regular vans, pickup trucks, and smaller trucks are not required to file. If a heavy vehicle is driven 5,000 miles or less during the tax year (7,500 miles for farm vehicles), you must still file Form 2290, but you do not have to pay the tax.

Who must e-file Form 2290?

We recommend that everyone e-file Form 2290. If you are reporting 25 or more vehicles, you are required to e-file using an IRS-approved provider. A small service fee usually applies. When you e-file, your stamped Schedule 1 is available much faster.

Why do I need an EIN to e-file?

The IRS uses your Employer Identification Number (EIN) to verify your business. If your EIN and business name do not match IRS records, your return may be rejected.

Can I e-file if I just received my EIN?

You should wait about 4 weeks after receiving your EIN before e-filing. Filing too soon may cause your return to be rejected.

Where can I find an approved e-file provider?

You can find IRS-approved providers on the IRS website. These providers are authorized to submit Form 2290 electronically. Expect a small service fee.

How will I know the IRS accepted my return?

Once accepted, you will receive an electronic stamped Schedule 1 with an IRS watermark from your e-file provider.

How do I correct a mistake on my e-filed return?

You can e-file corrections for weight, mileage, or VIN errors. For other types of errors, you must mail a corrected paper Form 2290 to the IRS.

What if I buy a new vehicle after filing?

File a new Form 2290 listing only the new vehicle(s). Do not re-file your original return.

Can I file one form for vehicles used in different months?

No. You must file separate forms because the tax amount depends on the month each vehicle was first used on public highways.

What if my return is rejected for duplication?

Check your VIN numbers to make sure you are not filing the same vehicle twice. Correct any errors and resubmit your return.

Can I claim a refund if I sold or destroyed a vehicle?

Yes. You can claim a credit on your next Form 2290 or file Form 8849 to request a refund.

Can I claim a refund if I drove 5,000 miles or less?

Yes. If you already paid the tax but drove 5,000 miles or less (7,500 miles for farm vehicles), you can claim a credit or refund in the next tax period.
